By 1877, construction of the first regular telephone line from Boston to Somerville, Massachusetts, had been completed. När Bell sökte patent på sin uppfinning hann han före en annan uppfinnare med två timmar. Naturligtvis blev det bråk mellan denna uppfinnare, Grey, och Bell.
